Chapter 16 - Harley
I woke so well rested. I couldn’t believe where I was. The window next to my bed looked out and across a massage gorge that disappeared into the dense rainforest below.
There was some serious water down there. I could just feel it. The mist from the powerful water force was rising up through the void.
I could hear Dad talking to someone in the lounge room, so I slipped on a huge white robe that is always available when you stay in a place like this and stepped out of the door into quite a space.
Dad was sitting there talking with this guy who was obviously very close to him. The table was full of breakfast foods with fruits, breads, steaming bacon, eggs, omelettes, berry puree, just way more that was needed and coffee steaming on cups in both of their hands.
I’d never seen this guy before but he was just one warm and very cool character indeed. He was right in the middle of a wild story with Dad just completely in the adventure, smiling and laughing as he spoke.
They both turned to see me as I came closer, but the story intensity did not stop in any way at all.
“So this kid jumped into his 4WD. A Total Beast of a machine and came charging out around the corner. Everyone was standing in disbelief and trying to wave him to a stop, but he just did it.”
“No Way!” “He Didn’t” said Dad as he smiled on the edge of laughter sipping his coffee.
“Yep!” This fine friend said as he described the monster squashing the Harley Davidson Masterpieces one after the other as they fell like dominos in front of him, only then to be crushed by the monster tyres.
“Your gotta be kidding!” Said Dad as he glared in total amazement. “Not the bikes. They’re fricken Harleys dude. That’s blasphemy!”
"Is this kid still alive?”
“Yep! He’s still working it off. Cost the family a fortune, also repainted the club house on top as a full apology.”
“Wow!” Said dad. "Lucky boy!"
“Yeh well! He was lucky that the leader of the gang is a guy called Mungz and he’s a hell of a wise biker leader if there ever was one. He could simple smell the drugs that were behind it all and was powerful enough to pull the hole incident to the biggest pause you’ve ever seen.”
Even though I had missed the beginning of the story, I could totally pick up the scene and where it was heading.
“This guy, Munz, is like the god of bikers in this area and what you think was about to be a massacre between the bikers and the surfers, with the cops and security guards coming in from all angles, instantly hit a shrieking stop as Mungz whaled out the most humongous mind shattering blast that you have ever heard.”
“Every single person, including the security guys, and the monster 4WD that was jammed up on the last bikes with it’s wheel grinding, all came to complete stop and silence as the crunch of metal echoed and died into silence.”
“Not a person took a single step. Then Munz stepped out into the middle of it all and commanded, “Nobody moves unless I say move. Is there a single person her that has a problem with that?””
There was not a word. Must have been 200 guys there and their girls and everyone was just frozen at attention.
Mungz continued:
“Nobody does one single thing unless I tell them to do so. I know that we have got that clear and I know that there is not one person her that does not understand what I am saying. If you want to decide to go against this at this very instant, then do so at your own peril.”
“Do I make myself clear!”
"I mean, you have never seen anything like this. This guy!"
"The next five minutes went like this:"
“All women and men with their girlfriends. Get in your cars and go home now.”
“All men that do not have a women that they have to take home tonight, do not move.”
"I tell you, they all just got in their cars and drove off as careful as if they were dropping their kids off to school."
"The police came in one car after the other, but they just stood back and showed that they had no intention whatsoever to interfere with this event."
"The kid was still sitting in the Monster."
"Mungz called three big guys and gave them the order. “Get that kid out of the car and hand him over to the police.”"
"They did just that. Climbed up on the mountainous mesh of Harley Davidson scrap metal and pried the door open to get to the kid who was sitting there like a zombie now. I guess he had come too and realised what he had done and was contemplating his inevitable execution."
"He was carefully lifted out of the car and ever so politely escorted and handed over to the police."
"Mungz then stood to a little more in the open and lifted his arms to direct everyone to huddle in close for a closed briefing."
"Mungz is just one of those guys that can speak and everyone can hear his voice. There would not be a single bikie that would think of crossing him. He is just so calm and like the Budda of Bikies in these parts. Known nationally as a huge leader and keeps his turf very clean."
"He just stood there nodding and making eye contact with everyone. When he knew that he had each and every Bikie and Surfer within his easy speaking distance, he made a clear statement with one simple question."
“Who gave drugs to that kid tonight and what was it?”
"That was all that had to be said. There would be a drug test anyway and anything in his system was gonna show up. So it would only then be a matter of tracking down the dealer. Mungz and his network new everyone."
“Now everyone peacefully go home. There will be no war over this. If there is one fist struck, they will be answering to me personally.”
“Everyone understands this?”
"I tell you what, every single one of them in complete unison acknowledged what they had just heard. There was no doubt who was running this investigation and who would be getting the answer.”
Dad just sat back in his chair and let out a big breath. “Holy Shit. I would have loved to have been there to see that.”
Dad turned to me and ushered me to the table with his arm.
“This is David, Shane.”
I shook hands and told him “Good to meet you David."
"Sit down Shane.” Dad spoke again, "I have the feeling that this is only the tip of the story.”
“Eat mate!”
And I started eating as David continued with the story.
“Turns out that Mungz has taken ahold of a program never seen before in this country. The same program that handled Columbia completely with the Gorilla Revolution now in full truss with the government. Crime gone down below 5% or anything in the past 80 years.”
“Total Miracle!”
“So Mungz had put in this complete Drug Free program through the whole bickie network that he is connected with. Says it as simple as this. “I don’t want my son or daughter to be on drugs. So why would I sell them to somebody else’s”"
"“It all stops here.”"
David continued. “But this was just the tip of it. There is this book with a crazy morale code. So simple that you would not believe it. He'd taken this on as his number one weapon. "Time to change and for us to change from the inside.”"
"If we can’t live by this code, then we are not alive and can’t be proud enough to call ourselves bikers.”
“We are not here to fight, murder, steal and sell drugs. We are here to ride and be free. And that freedom has a price to pay. We set an example that cannot be touched. Then we truly can rise above the law with clean hands.”
Dad sat there silent. You could see his thinking behind his eyes and warm smile.
David continued. “Now these bikers are riding far and wide spreading this book like crazy. People are starting to listen. The police are giving them full escort. What used to be a coastal drug run of marijuana trafficking, let alone the heavy hauls of Heroin and other vicious drugs, has turned into a police escort and freedom of passage into all areas of community.”
“I mean, these guys are even doing Drug Free Talks in schools and other community groups. You’ve never seen anything like it before.”
“I mean, how cool is it when a dozen bikers rock up to a school on massive Harley Davidson’s, briefing the school body on Drug Free Lives. These guys have got real life stories of before and after drugs. The real damage that is caused and how simple it is to avoid it.”
“Drugs aren’t cool if you want to be a biker!”
“This is the image that now follows bikers in this area.”
“This is gonna change this country Dave.” Said Dad and he turned with a warm smile looking at me. "This is the force that we need to stand up against the degradation that’s been occurring over the past decades in this country. On this planet.”
“Yep!” Said Dave. “Cops couldn’t ever control the bikers when they were hauling drugs. Now they are drug free, they are never going to slow them down. I mean, bikers hear are like the marshals. The Drug Free Lords of the Land.”
“Even some hard core surfers starting to take this one board. People from all walks."
“I’ve gotta meet this Mungz, Dave.” Said Dad. "We have to flow power to this guy.”
“I’m gonna get you guys together. Don’t you worry about that!”
Dave and Dad now just smiling at each other.
We all put a pretty good dint in the table full of food, Dad and Dave had a few old stories to share and laughed a heap. I was looking at Dad thinking “Who is this guy?”
Doesn’t matter. Here we are and I knew that Dad had brought me here for some reason.
